WHAT IS CAPSULAR CONTRACTURE?

Capsular contracture is a complication that can occur after breast implant or breast reconstruction surgery. It happens when the scar tissue (capsule) around the implant becomes tight and firm, causing the breast to feel hard, painful, or appear misshapen. While mild cases may only cause slight firmness, more advanced cases can lead to discomfort and distortion of the breast shape.

CAPSULAR CONTRACTURE TREATMENT OPTIONS

Treatment for capsular contracture is tailored to each patient’s needs and surgical history. Options include:

CAPSULECTOMY

Complete removal of the scar capsule, with or without implant replacement. Often recommended for advanced cases.

CAPSULOTOMY

Surgical release of the tight scar tissue to soften the breast. May be appropriate for select patients.

IMPLANT EXCHANGE OR REMOVAL

Replacement with a new implant or permanent removal, depending on the patient’s goals and medical needs.

REVISION BREAST RECONSTRUCTION

For patients who had reconstruction after breast cancer, revision surgery can restore softness, symmetry, and comfort. Fat grafting or supportive tissue (ADM) may also be used.

DOWNTIME

Recovery after capsular contracture surgery varies depending on the extent of treatment. Most patients can expect:

• Minimal downtime, at most 1 week of initial recovery before returning to light activities

• Temporary swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort

• Avoiding strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for 4–6 weeks

• Gradual return to normal activity as healing progresses

• Visible improvements in breast softness and shape within weeks, with continued refinement over several months
